Death Takes a Holiday…

So… I got a phone call a few weeks back from someone looking for a reader to entertain guests at a big party and after a couple of calls and some lengthy conversations and questions, I was told – Yes, we’d like to book you, but can you just have a word with my partner first, there’s one more question…

Ok…

Can you remove the Death card? I don’t want my party being remembered as that night when the day of Granny’s death was predicted!

So… I did laugh more than a little bit, before regaining my composure and saying – Yes! Of course! We don’t want that happening do we… 😀

Now my deck of choice is good old reliable M… he likes a good party and is never phased by the skeptics and the testers who don’t want to reveal their question or the generally curious who have no particular question in mind… He always pulls something out of the bag that is relevant as when I shuffle I always ask – Give me something that is useful for this person to know today…

Death XIII Death

And strangely enough Death has been a frequent flyer of late… throwing up a length and breadth of different meanings worthy of their own blog post… So when I picked up M to censor… I found I couldn’t do it… I could not bring myself to edit out Death… It went very much against the grain… I’ve never found the image to be upsetting and I’ve had people react strongly to the card… but it has always been the actual word Death rather than the image that has thrown them… And then I started to thumb through my deck and wonder how many more images could be a potential problem…

And I really couldn’t decide… as surely it’s what people associate with the image that triggers emotions and until that card lands down in front of someone, well who knows what memories or thoughts it will stir… It started to make my brain ache and at one point I joked that maybe I should just take out the latest deck that I’d bought… (this one :D)

Anyway… I decided that M would have to sit this one out… I would not cull any cards from my M as that made my deck feel clunky and like trying to play a sonata on a piano with black keys that refused to sound when you hit them…

But… I’m never at a blank for long… I have a whole spectrum of decks to chose from… From the deliciously dark to the saccharine tooth achingly sweet… So I gathered half a dozen or so that were sans Death…

And interestingly on the night… when people were given the choice… a lot of my choices were too light 😀

The majority of folks chose to opt for The Psychic Tarot Oracle Deck…

IMG_2695Now this is not a deck I use a great deal… as I do find it restrictive to read with as not only has it no tens in the deck but also there is a complete absence of court cards… However… it does have added seven cards for the Chakras and it reads really well for what it reads well on… But hey… No Death card as requested and in its place is Transformation…

Though… on an interesting side note… this little beauty below did turn out to be the deadliest assassin of the night…

IMG_2694But I’m not going to reveal those tales…

What I will reveal is that this deck did cause me a few problems… And it wasn’t the images… Again… It was the words…

Now, I don’t particularly pay much heed to the words… I’m looking at colours and images and where things sit and the overall noise that the spread makes when I look at it… And when I do look at the words they often shuffle themselves into something else… For example – Emotional Loss … In one reading where that came up… The words I heard were – Emotional TOSS! No! This is not emotional loss… This is emotional healing after dumping a loser…

IMG_2691So again… Words!! words butting in and disrupting my readings… Because people see words and they read them… they pick them out before they look at the picture… They weight importance to them and knee jerk react – Oh! OMG!! Conflict & Defeat!! What’s going to happen? And then they view me with suspicion as I tell them to ignore them… Why? What are you hiding?

Nothing… and then I soothe them into the pictures and they listen to me and what I see…

So… Today I’ve been sat with that deck and contemplating my first borderectomy…

But I can’t bring myself to cut them…

For several reasons…

But I’ll give you just a couple…

They have really pretty golden gilt edges that I can’t bear to see being sliced away…

And also… It’d make for a pretty lengthy and possibly tedious exercise… and I figure that that is time that would be better spent filling in a few of my own blanks…

  1. Liking this sound of colour tarot, Karen. Also, re the reaction to card meanings by words, etc.: Do they want a reading or not? If they just want angel strokes and positive vibes instead of insights about real life, then I’m not sure I want to read for them anyway. Humans…**sigh**

  2. Lol Joanne it is often the case when you read at large social gatherings that you get an audience… And most of the people there had never come across tarot before other than on TV so I had a lot of curious folk and also a brilliant night as the majority were pretty open to hearing what I would say… I had two people who were deternined to shoot me down… And prove it was all rubbish! Both of them kept butting in to other people’s readings and eventually they sat down for a reading… Now by this time… They’d really set themselves up for what came next… Firstly never mock the tarot reader… She does bite back and also when you poke her… She can see all those corners of your soul you’d sooner hide… Secondly… When you’ve been butting in all night… You get a massive crowd gather to hear your reading… I shot them both down in spectacular style, so much so that people were coming up throughout the rest of the night to high five me on how spot on I was… LOL! I love big crowds and I love banter and in there often you get some very insightful readings… But if you want to heckle… Then do so at your own peril… Between years of working in Casinos and Biker’s Bars and now forrays into standup comedy… They are very few things that I don’t have a snappy comeback for 😀

    • Oh… My sound of colour… That’s been rolling around the back of my head for maybe 10 years? Or more? There have been several things of late that have pulled it to the forefront… This was just one more interesting thought prompt…
I’ve always wanted a hand drawn deck that talks in my accent… I do mostly hear colour like music when I read…
