Palming Aces…

Welcome to the latest Tarot Blog Hop, wranlged by Arwen Lynch Poe, who posed the question:

How can I best foster the energy of the Aces in my life?
My thoughts leading to a spread went roughly like this:

Ok… so whip your Aces out of the pack and lay them to one side for now.
From the majors, pick out The Empress, The Wheel, The World, The Sun and The Magician… place these as imaginary fingers going from left to right as shown above with The Empress as the thumb to The Magician sat as the pinky… In the palm of the hand, place The Tower…
Next, select the Ace that you want to work with… place the Ace in the palm over The Tower and imagine that it is a seed that is going to be cracked open… visualise it breaking apart…
Now… place a card at each finger and much like the 3 Magi or the good fairies that visited Sleeping Beauty… imagine each card that is laid down as being a gift bestowed by the Major…
So you might say…
I am The Empress and I give to you the gift of the 8 of Swords…

So here are the cards I pulled for myself:
The Ace of Swords was chosen… the question relates to a creative project but the Ace of Wands does not feel to be the best fit here as the fun creative part has been done and now it comes to the brutal editing…
So… In brief…
I am The Empress and I give to you the gift of the 8 of Swords…
The ability to wiggle free of perceived restrictions and the means to find your way out of the corner that you feel that you’ve backed yourself into…
I am The Wheel and I give to you the gift of the 6 of Cups…
A reminder to return to the original source and exchange of ideas and the ability to find the patterns and cycles…
I am The World and I give to you the gift of the 7 of Pentacles…
This one made me laugh somewhat as every time I’ve thought about this project recently, the words that come to mind are – ughhh… it’s just withering on the vine… So this feels to be a timely kick up the ass to give me the strength and patience to reap what has been sown before it does indeed shrivel away…
I am The Sun and I give to you the gift of the Queen of Cups…
I’ll help you to bring back and restore that loving feeling!
I am The Magician and I give to you the gift of the 9 of Pentacles…
Let’s finish this spell and bring things to a fruitful ending… money’s not really the issue here… I’ve been speaking to The Empress and we both agree it’s time for you to complete this so you can cut free and move on to the next task…
And speaking of moving on…
I have neighbours either side waiting to hear from you 🙂

For this blog hop, Arwen Lynch Poe set the tone with-

It’s that time of the year again! The dreaded office party. Oh no! But we are going to make it fun. Now is the time for our Winter celebration. You may call that Yule or Chanukah or Kwanzaa or Solstice or Christmas or some other name. For this hop, your challenge is to join us in an office party. Crazy right? But read on! You are to create a Winter gift for your readers. That can be your insight into which Tarot/Lenormand/Oracle card is the most like Winter for you. Maybe there’s a deck you find seasonal. You could offer a recipe that is tied to a Tarot card. Maybe tell us a story about holidays past. Create a spread, write a poem, design a card. Whatever you choose to do will be a perfect gift of you to the rest of our Tarot community. So gather round for this Winter Tarot Blog Hop as we do our own version of a virtual Secret Elf office party.

Well, unfortunately, folks… I am a party pooper of gigantic proportions and I’ve got my feet up and I’m indulging in some 1980’s TV…

But… before you draw any Grinch comparisons… I have got you a little gift… Some folks say that TV rots the brain… but it gave me a little food for thought and something for your tarot table… see… you hear nonsense…

I see ∑

If you add up all the numbers 1 to 12…then you get a number that sounds more than somewhat familiar to Tarot readers everywhere… you get that magical 78… So…I’m sure many of you will have managed to slip the name of a new deck to Santa and those of you that have been good have goodies to play with… as for the naughtier amongst you…I’m sure you’ve already got plenty to choose from… so gather your decks… and here… I bring to you…

You have 12 days to do it…

But best of all…

It doesn’t induce mind-bending nauseating pain when you accidentally tread barefoot on it in the dark…

Talkin’ ’bout The Cultural Revolution Tarot…

Admittedly… I’m a little surprised that I bought this deck…

I’ve had half an eye on James Battersby’s timeline for a while as I’m waiting to see when Twisted Tarot Tales comes out… So I’ve seen several images of The Cultural Tarot, created by himself alongside the main visual designer Christine Aguiar, float by…

And they’ve pleased my eye but I’ve questioned – Would I actually use this deck? Also… I kind of got very turned off to History at school by the drearily drab Ms Lions whose every lesson consisted of turn to page x of your text book and copy out the first 3 paragraphs… Yeah… those lessons were dusty on so many levels… But as more images floated by, they felt less like Ms Lions and more akin to Mr Fox… Now Mr Fox…. he was as dapper as the old Lion was dull… An animated storyteller, not a book in sight as he breathed life into long dead names and ushered them in technicolour into our imaginations… But… I digress… Yes… I’m well aware that I often do that! But still remained the question – Would I use this deck?

So while pondering and pausing over whether or not to hit PayPal… I got a bit of a nudge…

I caught site of a post and I thought… No? Really? Have I read that wrong?

So for want of a better word… Let’s call it a Review Forum… I’ll not name it, as it’s inhabitants appear to like to remain faceless and nameless as they tap away at their keyboards… But there was a whole clickety click going on calling for this deck to be banned from the site…

Now… I’m not a fan of censorship at the best of times as I don’t feel that it is anybody else’s business to determine on my behalf what I may or may not find offensive… actually don’t even get me started on that… In fact… I’ll gloss over rapidly to the part which made me double with laughter and hell yeah!!! which was Mr Battersby’s response… 😀

So… it seems to me, that the best way to support the work of Independent Artists, is to put your money where your mouth is and go buy their work…

And so The Cultural Tarot arrived shortly on ,my doorstep…

Cultural RevolutionI opened my package and was delighted!

There is so much I could say about this deck and I barely know where to start, so I’ll try not to repeat what is contained in the Brochure and whizz through a few things that I found interesting…

Ok… so first off… With all new decks, I check out the Ruin! Death! Destruction! factor…

This is not because I personally have any problems, with Death, The Tower and 10 of Swords, but rather due to the nature of some of the gigs I work, I’m frequently asked to keep things light and not bring anything that will freak people out… (Though hilariously… the last time I had someone freak over a card, it was the 10 of Cups… yeah… I kid ye not… whodda thunk it?!)

IMG_4643Now this Death card… I really rather love… It does most distinctly smell as though all four horsemen of the Apocalypse have rocked up and I find that quite refreshing against trends of Death biting the bullet in favour of Transformation type images… As for The Tower and the 10 of Swords… well the only thing I find upsetting about them really, is that they are images that have become all too familiar on our TV screens…

I think about Propaganda images… I think about how History is written by Historians… I wander off for a while to imagine how Lion vs Fox would retell the tales… I wonder how fine the lie is between education and propaganda…

Certainly several of the images feel very familiar to my Western mind…

IMG_4644

The thing I find most delightful and delicious is the depiction of females…

IMG_4649

The 6 of Swords stops me in my tracks…

It feels intensely poignant when you know how the Comorants are handled and you consider that against the darker aspects of History…

IMG_4647Would I use this deck?

Yeah…

How?

Well… it occurs to me that it naturally lends itself to questions on marketing and here is a spread I used to examine a question put to me recently…

cultural revolution tarot spread

And speaking of marketing…

I asked the deck to describe it’s brand image in 3 words…

IMG_4648Ha! My deck has a sense of humour…

We Three Queens of Orient are…

You know what… fill your own blanks in… decide for yourself…

See… I kind of believe that the role of an artist or a writer or come to that an Historian…

Is to make you think

Make YOU think…

Not to tell you WHAT to think…

😉

A Year with the Goddesses…

It’s amazing how time flies… It only seems like yesterday that I was contacting Lyn Thurman to talk about writing for Soul Path Magazine…

Yet a couple of days ago I was submitting a piece on Hsi Wang Mu for the forthcoming issue… which will be my 13th…

Here are the faces I’ve met over the last 12 months…

It’s been a pleasure…

Hawk takes chariot for test drive…

Freya the Warrior Goddess

Freya the Warrior Goddess

So… I recently wrote an article for Soul Path Magazine and if you want to read that in full and also check out all the other great items that are in there, then go click on this link!

But being as it is Friday, it feels to be a good day to share with you the spread I designed to look at how you are loyal to yourself…

Riding out with Freya

Riding out with Freya

1. How do you bring balance to yourself? In what ways do you stand tall and proud?

2. How do you move forward like a warrior? What do you chose to leave behind and what do you chose carry forward with you?

3. How aware are you of the messages that you receive? How do you recognise perfect timing?

4. What is your rite of passage? How do you free yourself from entanglement and rise above obstacles?

5.How do you find strength and new perspective when faced with defeat? How do you recognise the opportunities that are disguised in loss?

6. Now consider all your cards together… what story do they tell you?

So… then I have a lady called Hawk drop me a very lovely email, to ask if I could take a look at her cards for her…

So… Here is what happened when I took Hawk for a test drive…

Hawk talks Mystereum with Freya...

Hawk talks Mystereum with Freya…

4 of Swords
You bring balance to yourself by having clear ideas on where you are going and for every thought, putting an action into place to move you one step closer to where you want to be. You stand tall and proud by imagining yourself at your final destination… Like a chess player will think many moves ahead to their goal, you have a head for strategy and know the value of clear calm communication and moving things at a steady pace.

8 of Wands
With you, it’s not so much a matter of choosing what you take or leave behind, but more the sense that you can make a base camp, take what is needed to travel lightly and return anytime to collect anything you need… Nothing is left behind, just put in storage until needed. You move forward by being quick to respond and launch into action, you have your eye scanning in all directions for new opportunities and move swiftly to grab them when you think aha!! That’s got my name on it!

Queen of Pentacles
Maintaining a certain amount of order in your surroundings is important for you to feel fully grounded. Inspiration comes from being outdoors and feeling that mother earth connection… And you have good instincts. You need to stay on top of mundane matters and keep the day to day stuff in order and running smoothly, as when you move into new areas/ ideas, you move swiftly… And you don’t want to interrupt your flow by having an underlying niggle of worry that …oh… I hope the direct debit for the gas bill is in place… Keep all your practical stuff up to date to avoid distraction!

Judgement
Your rite of passage? Well you know all those thoughts and ideas that you have when you are sat with the Q of P in the garden, taking in all the heat of the sun and the feel of the earth beneath you, and the smells that surround and the birdsong in the air? Take all those thoughts and let them unfurl… Stretch them out as far as you can and imagine them through to how far you can take them… You free yourself simply by knowing that you are following your true calling…

5 of Swords
Sometimes you just have to accept that shit happens! Don’t get caught up in trying to think it through and re-run all the ‘ what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’… Drop it all… Take a breather and let it all fall away… Rest up until you feel you are fully rested then move on…

As a group of cards, it feels that you should remember that before you nurture others, you first must tend to yourself… I see that little scene where they give out the instructions on a plane… In the event of an emergency, put on your own oxygen mask first. Yours! Not the kids, not anybody else’s… Yours! You’re no use to anyone if you can’t breathe properly…
Pay attention to your breath… See how it feels… How does it rise and fall? Take note and if it feels to be off… Then rest… Then when you’ve cared for yourself… Then you can go conquer the world! 😀

So.. if you fancy a bit of friendly Friday chat… then go hitch a ride with Freya and see what she has to say…
